Ms Kathy Baisley

Associate Professor

United Kingdom

I joined LSHTM in 2005, as a statistician at the Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU) in Tanzania. From 2015-2018, I was based at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in rural KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, as the senior statistician and head of the statistics group. I returned to London at the end of 2018, but have continued to collaborate with colleagues in Tanzania and South Africa. From January 2024, I will be based at AHRI again as the head of the Data Science Unit.

Before joining LSHTM, I spent seven years as a statistician in the pharmaceutical industry. I have an MSc in Epidemiology and an MSc in Statistics. My first degree is in Geology, and before studying epidemiology, I worked as a geophysicist.

Teaching

I was the Programme Director of the MSc Medical Statistics from 2018-2023. I am a co-module organiser for Foundations of Medical Statistics, and Research Design and Analysis. I also teach on Introduction to Statistical Computing, and the Advanced Course in Epidemiological Analysis (ACEA) short course.

Research

I am a member of the International Statistics and Epidemiology Group in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology. Since joining LSHTM, my main research interest has been in the epidemiology of HIV, HPV and other sexually transmitted infections in sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on the design and analysis of intervention trials.

I have been the senior statistician on a number of complex HIV prevention trials and HPV vaccine trials. I am the joint Principal Investigator on two large ongoing trials of single-dose HPV vaccination in Tanzania, one of which contributed to the evidence base for WHO’s recent recommendation that the HPV vaccine dose schedule be updated to allow countries to choose a 1-dose schedule. In addition to my research on HPV in Tanzania, I am a coinvestigator and lead statistician on a number of HIV treatment and prevention trials at AHRI, including a cluster-randomised trial to investigate network-delivered HIV self-testing, a stepped-wedge trial to evaluate a community-based biosocial HIV prevention intervention, and a stepped-wedge trial of a mobile phone-based intervention to help adolescents living with HIV transition to adult care.
